Kotenage. It was an arm-lock throw that won it all for Hakuho over Terunofuji.
Match of The Day
Yokozuna East Hakuho versus Ozeki 1 East Terunofuji
They delivered. This had to be match of the day coming in, and then it was on the dohyo. Hakuho and Terunofuji took forever to start, first just staring at each other standing, then waiting a long time while squatting. Hakuho waited to put his second hand down, even, pulling out the mind games.
When they finally clashed, Hakuho began with a vicious right forearm to Terunofuji's jaw. Terunofuji still moved in and worked hard for a hold. They began to dance, moving each other around the dohyo. Terunofuji ha...

Tottari. Hakuho decided to end his match against Takayasu early with a textbook arm bar throw that sent the Sekiwake to the dirt.
Match of The Day
Ozeki 1 East Terunofuji versus Ozeki 2 East Shodai
Shodai gave Terunofuji all that he could handle by doing all the Shodai things. The tachiai was awkward, with Shodai standing Terunofuji up and Terunfouji getting a shallow grip on the mawashi. Shodai broke that and began moving. Shodai was never in a great position to win, but he kept Terunofuji on edge. After dancing, Shodai very nearly spun well enough as he was headed out to beat Terunofuji. The next Yokozuna held his foot in and won.

Notable Maneuvers
Komatasukuisi. Terutsuyoshi pulled out the rare "over-thigh scooping body drop" in his battle of the tricksters with Chiyoshoma. Essentially, he grabbed Chiyoshoma's thigh from the side and threw him backwards. This is the first time he has done it in his entire career.
Match of The Day
Sekiwake East Takayasu versus Maegashira 6 West Kiribayama
This one went forever, which obviously is Takayasu's game. Kiribayama tried on multiple occasions to break the stalemate, only to find himself locked up again. Takayasu almost looked like he wasn't going to pull a maneuver, but let Kiribayama beat himself. Kiribayama didn't, but f...

Sukuinage. Hokutofuji looked like he was going to provide another upset of Shodai by knocking him back. Instead, the Ozeki moved slightly aside, grabbed Hokutofuji's arm, and won with a beltless arm throw.
Match of The Day
Maegashira 1 West Daieisho versus Komusubi West Meisei
Neither man has had the basho they would like (especially Daieisho), but they proved on Day EIght they both can have a slapfest. Not only did both men unleash a heavy dose of tsuppari, they absorbed the blows. Meisei got the best of Daieisho in the end, but the match was exciting from start to finish.

Notable Maneuvers
Uwatenage. Three rikishi, Kiribayama, Chiyoshoma, and Yokozuna Hakuho, all won with the overarm throw. Tellingly, all three are Mongolian, as the maneuver relates to those used in traditional Mongolian wrestling.
Match of The Day
Yokozuna East Hakuho versus Maegashira 3 West Tobizaru
Well, that was something. Tobizaru's approach was to stand as far back as he could in the dohyo, then try and get a jump on the dai-Yokozuna. It led to a matta, followed by a sort of but not really tachiai. Tobizaru touched Hakuho only enough to not back up. Hakuho grew fed up with this, and ended up just standing there waiting for Tobizaru to attack. Tobiz...

Yorikiri. The plain old frontal force out won 7 matches in Makuuchi on Day SIx. It was just that kind of a day.
Match of The Day
Maegashira 5 East Okinoumi versus Maegashira 3 West Tobizaru
Okinoumi very nearly bottled Tobizaru up to make quick work of this one, but Tobizaru forced up Okinoumi's arms to prevent a solid grip. As Okinoumi struggled to really grab a hold, Tobizaru worked his hand to the back of Okinoumi's mawashi. That allowed Tobizaru to pull out a shitatenage, the underarm throw.

Oshidashi. An astonishing nine matches of the twenty of Day Four were won with the simple frontal push out.
Match of The Day
Yokozuna 1 East Hakuho versus Maegashira 2 East Takanosho
Takanosho never really had one moment where he should have had Hakuho, but he made him scramble all around the dohyo. One of Hakuho's best skills has always been his recovery balance, and he needed it all. Hakuho remained undefeated not by dominating but by escaping a game Takanosho.
Recap
There are just three undefeated rikishi: Hakuho, Terunofuji, and Tamawashi. With 11 matches remaining, that is no guarantee that a veteran Mongolian is bound to lift the Emperor's Cup. It is a sign that this basho might not need a ze...

Notable Maneuvers
Kainahineri. Takanosho had managed to stalemate Terunofuji. For a long while, they just leaned on each other, Takanosho's right shoulder against Terunofuji's left. Then Terunofuji let go with his left hand, grabbed Takanosho's left arm with it, and pulled off a two-handed arm twist down.
Match of The Day
Maegashira 5 East Okinoumi versus Maegashira 5 West Hoshoryu
Hoshoryu has looked good so far in Nagoya, and he nearly had his third victory in a matter of seconds. But Okinoumi held on to avoid a throw, which set up a great back and forth yotsu battle. Each man attempted throws, trips, and pulls, but never successfully. Hoshoryu even switched his grip to mostly grab the front of Okinoumi's mawashi. This ...

Notable Maneuvers
Hoshoryu beat Kiribayama with a shitatenage, which isn't that notable. Except it was just such a great version.
Match of The Day
Maegashira 6 East Onosho versus Maegashira 7 East Myogiryu
These two kind of took a second to get really engaged, then moved to the edge. At that point, a certain kind of chaos that only two rikishi like this could do. They called it a slap-down, hatakikomi, but Onosho added this bizarre twist as it happened. That made it look like Myogiryu nearly won the match.
Recap
The lasting moment of Day Two from Nagoya 2021 will be Takakeisho clutching his arm while leaning against the dohyo after his loss to Ichinojo. It looked like he was injured from the tachiai, as Ichinojo grabbed h...

Notable Maneuvers
Well, Ichiyamamoto won his first ever Makuuchi match over Ishiura with the harimanage, a backward belt throw. Basically, Ishiura successfully got under the thruster Ichiyamamoto, but Ichiyamamoto managed to get his long arms on the back of Ishiura's mawashi and send him down.
Special notice should also be made for Tobizaru's kekaeashi, a minor inner leg sweep.
Match of The Day
Komusubi 1 East Wakatakakage versus Maegashira 3 East Hokutofuji
This started with two mattas. On the real start, Wakatakakage had the first second of the tachiai by preventing Hokutofuji's full nodowa, but then Hokutofuji prevented Wakatakage from getting any kind of grip. At that point, they began awkwardly maneuvering, with Waka...
